ROUND-UP: Steelers 19, Panthers 3

August 31st, 2007 by Neal Coolong

The threat of a thunderstorm delayed the start of the Steelers final regular season contest of the year. Not that it mattered much to the team’s starters.

The P-G says the starters barely broke a sweat, and by all accounts, they defeated the Panthers 19-3 in their final tune-up for the real thing starts Sept. 9 at Cleveland.

Cut to the cuts

Kimo news is good news (and DHS will be in MN the next week and change)

August 30th, 2007 by Neal Coolong

Writing and packing do not mix.

One of the best Steelers writers around, Ryan Wilson, apparently is moving into a new home (or something like that) over this weekend, and he won’t be available until the week before the season starts. Read the rest of this entry »

Ward breaks nose, likely to play in season opener

August 28th, 2007 by Neal Coolong

The T-R is reporting this afternoon that Steelers WR Hines Ward broke his nose, and had surgery on it Monday.

Neither Ward nor the team disclosed this information after Sunday night’s 27-13 win over Philadelphia. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he doesn’t expect Ward to miss the regular season opener at Cleveland Sept. 9.

“Hines is Hines. I wouldn’t count Hines out,” Tomlin said of the Steelers’ career leader in receptions. “He’s a player-coach in my mind. He’s not a guy you need to worry about being up at game time.”

The Barlow Experiment ends, 10 total cut Monday

August 27th, 2007 by Neal Coolong

In a not-so-surprising move, the Steelers have cut veteran RB Kevan Barlow in wake of Tuesday’s deadline to pare the roster down to 75.

According to the Blitzburgh Report, Barlow was the only big(ish) name cut, as the Turk visited he and nine other players. The P-G confirmed it Monday night. Read the rest of this entry »

ROUND-UP: Steelers 27, Eagles 13

August 27th, 2007 by Neal Coolong

As expected, it was the starters who stole the show in Pittsburgh’s 27-13 victory over Philadelphia Saturday night at Heinz Field.

The first-team offense got 13 points in the second quarter, beating Philadelphia’s starters 13-3 at the half. Probably more impressive than anything in the Steelers’ first-team defense’s ability to put pressure on the Eagles’ quarterbacks. Read the rest of this entry »

Steelers Roundtable: Is Dan Kreider obsolete?

August 27th, 2007 by Neal Coolong

Die Hard Steel author Neal Coolong was asked to join AOL Fanhouse writers JJ Cooper and Ryan Wilson (who is also the author of Heels, Sox and Steelers) in a two-question roundtable format on the Steelers. Check back with Cooper’s page each week for more Q and A.

This is also posted on AOL

The topics for this week are Dan Kreider’s shaky hold on a roster spot and the worries about the Steelers offensive line. Read the rest of this entry »

IN-GAME BLOG: Steelers 27, Eagles 13

August 26th, 2007 by Neal Coolong

7:37 p.m. Good evening and good hunting! I’m signing on despite symptoms of carpal tunnel (been writing since 5 a.m.), and the most ridiculously stupid pre-game show I’ve ever seen on the local Philly NBC affiliate. Read the rest of this entry »

Colon’s lock at RT another example of a fine 4th round pick

August 25th, 2007 by Neal Coolong

P-G (Now) writer Gerry Dulac says in his Saturday morning notebook that RT Willie Colon is getting the nod again as the starter against Philadelphia Sunday night. Veteran and incumbent starter Max Starks will serve in a back-up role for the third consecutive pre-season game, and it seems official that Colon (cuh-LOAN, unfortunately, I cannot make my usual SNL “Super Colon-Blow” reference anymore. Oh, what the hell, here’s one more for old time’s sake) will be Pittsburgh’s right tackle this season.

Colon, the fourth-round pick from Hofstra, isn’t the latest find the Steelers have from the fourth round. Ryan Wilson’s favorite player “RoboPunter” Dan Sepulveda was taken (traded up for, in fact) in the fourth round.

While Wilson points out scrub-nobody WR Fred Gibson was a miss in 2005, the Steelers have also picked up CB Ike Taylor (4th, 2003), ILB Larry Foote (4th, 2002), DE Aaron Smith (4th, 1999) and CB Deshea Townsend (4th, 1998) at that spot.

That’s six 2007 starters drafted in the fourth round since 1998. And the jury is still out on 2007 4b selection DE Ryan McBean. Word is he’s had some troubles, but Jim Wexell has mentioned often that assistant head coach/defensive line coach Johnnie Mitchell loves his potential.

If the Steelers draft another Mathias Nkwenti next year in the 4th round, I have faith they can bounce back with an Ike, Foote or Smitty the following season.
